President ratifies the Special Economic Zones Bill

President of the Maldives, His Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayoom has on 1st September 2014, ratified the Special Economic Zones Bill.

The Bill was passed by the Parliament at the 29th ‎sitting of its second ‎session, on 27 August 2014.

The Special Economic Zones Act is an important piece of legislature aimed to facilitate the delivery of strategic development projects needed for the country, and is a key pledge of the Government towards achievement of its economic development agenda.

The Act provides for the designation, creation and management of special economic zones in the Maldives and investments in those zones, and incentives granted to the developers and investors operating in the zones.

Maldives Investment Forum launched in Singapore

His Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, President of the Republic of Maldives has today
launched the Maldives Investment Forum (MIF) at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. Minister of
Economic Development, Mr Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Tourism, Mr Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor,
Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr Mohamed Shainee and Minister of Youth & Sports, Mr
Mohamed Maleeh Jamal also joined the President in the event.

Initiated by the Ministry of Economic Development, the event was attended by master developers,
real estate firms and financiers from across the world together with top players from the local
corporate sector and is the first event of its kind held by the Government. A key objective of the MIF
is to showcase the potential of Maldives as an attractive investment destination.

A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of 5 strategic investment projects by His Excellency
Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom. The projects include development of an integrated project in the
northernmost atoll of the country Ihavandhippolhu, Expansion of the Ibrahim Nasir International
Airport, Expansion and Relocation of the Male’ Port, Development of Hulhumale’ Youth City and
Exploration for Oil & Gas in the country.

In addition to briefing sessions at Ministerial level on each of the 5 projects that were launched, the
MIF also provided the opportunity for participants from the local business sector to network and
partner with the foreign investor community that were present at the forum.
